Sarpa Samskara Pooja : Benefits, Procedure, Cost

Sarpa Samskara pooja is quite famous in Kukke Subramanya temple. This is done to reduce the ill effects of Nagdosha in one’s life. 

The word “Samskar” in Sanskrit means putting together and making perfect. It also indicates a purificatory Hindu ritual to shape one’s karma. Hence it can be concluded Sarpa Samskara pooja is done to making your life perfect and purify the ill doings of previous birth and also to reduce Sarpa dosha presence due to the planetary position in your horoscope.

On What Days Pooja Is Not Done?

Pooja is done almost every day in Kukke temple, excepting Ekadashi and Dwadashi days. On special festival days like Mahashivrathri and eclipse day (both solar and lunar) and during annual festival days (15 days) pooja is not performed. 

How Many Days Pooja Is Done?

It takes 2 days to complete Sarpa Samskara Pooja. You need to make arrangements for booking tickets and accommodation during these days. 

Kukke Subramanya Temple Accommodation

Devotees performing this pooja are largely given cottages and choultries of temple devasthanam. You can visit Kukke temple for booking any choultry which is given for reasonable price or book any private hotels of your choice nearby. 

It is better for you to reach Kukke one day in advance to buy tickets for pooja, due to huge crowd. If you do not get confirmed ticket for next day, you will be placed in waiting list. 

No online booking can be done. Only physical booking is done on first come first serve basis. 

Sarpa Samskara Pooja Day 1

You can take a dip in Kumaradhara River that runs nearby temple. Then you can go pradakshina of Aadhi Subramanya Sannadhi for 3 times. 

  • A priest will perform Sankalp asking details of your name, gothra and nakshatra. You can also tell the reason you are doing this pooja with the priest to get blessings. 
  • Next you will be asked to move to Pooja Mandap where people are gathered in groups. Big drawings of snake can be seen at many places on the hall decorated with lemon and other fruits. 
  • Pooja begins at 7AM and completes around 12.30PM. 
  • Lunch and dinner will be provided inside the temple free of cost for devotees who perform this pooja. It is not advised to take outside food while doing Sarpa Samskara pooja. 

Sarpa Samskara Pooja Day 2

Start your day with holy dip at River Kumaradhara. There is a popular belief that this river possess great medical values to get rid of any kind of skin problems including leprosy. 

Then visit the temple and meet the same priest who was assigned to you the previous day. It may take more than half day to complete the rituals which include homam and panda pradhanam. 

Here panda (form of rice ball) is offered to snake God to eliminate the obstacles in life and to please him. 

  • After completion of Homam, Naga pradhista is done. 
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the temple during this day. 
  • You will have to take the blessings of 11 Brahmacharis who will be seated in a row. 
  • Finally Prasad will be distributed for devotees who performed pooja. You are supposed to take this Prasad daily for 12 days without leaving a single day. 
  • One is not supposed to share the Prasad with others in the family. Sweets made from coconuts offered as Prasad can be consumed. 
  • The rituals done on these two days are similar to one performed during Thithi or Srartham where one gives thithi for his ancestors. 

How Much It Cost?

Sarpa Samskara pooja cost Rs.4200 and 4 persons can participate in pooja. 

Don’ts During Pooja

  • You are not supposed to visit any other temple during pooja days.
  • Don’t eat non vegetarian food and avoid taking outside food. 
  • Your diet should be free from onion and garlic.
  • Try to follow the instructions given by the priests. Don’t take non vegetarian foods for at least 12 days or until you are taking Prasad at home. 
  • Don’t enter the temple after completion of pooja on the first day and don’t do archana or pooja for any other God on the first day. 
  • Always have total faith in pooja rituals to achieve the desired goal early. 
  • Pooja should not be done during pregnancy and during menstrual cycle. 
  • Women can do pooja a week after completion of menstrual periods. 

Auspicious Days

Pooja is considered special if done during Sravana, Karthika and Margazhi months of the calendar. 

Dress Code

South Indian men are expected to wear only dhoti and upper cloth during pooja. Women can wear saree or churidhar with duppatta. 

Timings

Pooja begins at 7am, 9am and 6pm daily. 

Sarpa Samskara Pooja Procedure

As you know there will be thousands of people who perform pooja. Hence you will be divided into groups. You need to follow the same group for 2 days. 

  • Eight priests will perform Sarpa Samskara pooja reciting slokas and japam. There will be Agni gundams at each corner of the hall where homam is performed by the priests. 
  • First day procedure starts with Dhana samskaram where you will give towel to the priest. 
  • There will be many small idols of snake made of wheat flour inside the mandap. The priest will take one of such idol and drop it inside the fire (agni homam). 
  • It symbolizes that you are performing final rites to the snake and please him. Any unknown curse of snake will be taken care of after pooja. 
  • Next another wheat flour snake is dropped into the homam and finally the entire idols are put inside the Agni to complete the pooja. 
  • 2nd day procedure starts with Pinda Pradhanam and ends with Naga Pradishta. 
  • Naga pradishta is done after noon, hence you can have breakfast and follow the procedure for it.

Many people continue to do Ashlesha Balipooja for 2nd day after completion of Naga Pradishta.
